Senior Gamers Club

The Senior Resource Center is excited to announce the launch of a new Game Club for adults age 60 and older, offering a fun and social way to keep minds sharp and spirits high. The first gathering will be held Tuesday, September 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Senior Resource Center Activity Room, 206 E. Stephenson Street, Freeport. The group will meet twice a month at the same time and location.

Open to all adults 60 and older, the Game Club will feature a variety of card games, board games, and strategy games. The first meeting will include some friendly rounds of play and a discussion about which games participants would like to enjoy or learn in future sessions.

Research consistently shows that playing games is more than just fun—it’s good for your brain. Studies from organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institute on Aging indicate that engaging in mentally stimulating activities can help:

  • Strengthen memory and cognitive skills
  • Improve problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
  • Enhance social connections and reduce feelings of isolation
  • Lower stress and boost mood through laughter and friendly competition

“Game-playing combines mental stimulation with social interaction, both of which are key ingredients for maintaining brain health as we age,” said Amanda Faivre, Senior Resource Center Executive Director. “We’re excited to create a welcoming space where older adults can come together, challenge their minds, and enjoy one another’s company.”

There is no cost to participate, and no experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm.
